About

The place, in context

The mortar that holds Pontcysyllte together was mixed with ox blood, lime and water. Thomas Telford and William Jessop finished the structure on 26 November 1805, after ten years of work and roughly £47,000 of subscribers' money. It carries the Llangollen Canal 307 metres across the valley of the River Dee, 38 metres above the water. Nothing in Britain had been attempted at that scale. Today the same channel carries narrowboats and, increasingly, the open canoes used on Llangollen Guided Aqueduct Canoe Tour tours. The engineering is a study in subtraction. Nineteen spans rest on eighteen masonry piers, each hollowed above a certain height to shed weight. The trough itself is cast iron, cast in sections at the Plas Kynaston foundry and bolted together with flanged joints sealed with Welsh flannel and lead. It measures 3.4 metres wide and 1.6 metres deep. A towpath runs along one side; the other edge falls away without a railing, so that a boat seen from below appears to move through air. The waterway was never meant to end here. Pontcysyllte formed one link in the unfinished Ellesmere Canal, a scheme to join the Mersey, the Dee and the Severn. Commercial traffic in coal, limestone and slate faded within a century. The cut survived because it carried drinking water drawn from the Horseshoe Falls at Llantysilio, and because pleasure boats found it. UNESCO inscribed the eleven-mile stretch from Gledrid to the Horseshoe Falls as a World Heritage Site in 2009, listing Chirk Aqueduct and Chirk Tunnel alongside it. That inscription changed how the site is read. Trevor Basin, once a transhipment yard for the Cefn quarries, is now the arrival point for walkers, boaters and paddlers. The Canal & River Trust maintains the trough and drains it every few years for inspection. There is no entrance fee to walk along the towpath and aqueduct, which keeps the crossing open to anyone on foot. What a paddle trip adds is the waterline view, the perspective of the cargo boats that once worked this channel. Visitors weighing Llangollen Canal kayaking against the wider field of Wrexham waterway landmarks tend to reach the same conclusion, and Llangollen Guided Aqueduct Canoe Tour tickets remain the most direct route to it.

"The trough falls away without a railing, and a boat crossing it appears from below to be moving through air."
Your experience

What a tour day looks like

A step-by-step walkthrough of the visit — what you'll see, how long each stage takes, and the details that matter.

You park at Trevor Basin Visitor Centre, off Station Road, and aim to be on the water inside the 10:00–15:00 arrival window, when the car park still has space and the towpath is not yet three abreast. Your Llangollen Guided Aqueduct Canoe Tour tour guide meets you at the slipway, fits a buoyancy aid, and runs through the paddle stroke on flat water before anything else happens. You kneel or sit, feel the hull settle, and push off. The first few hundred metres are ordinary canal: reed edges, moored narrowboats, a heron that lifts and resettles ahead of you. Then the banks stop. You are in the trough, 3.4 metres wide, with the towpath and its iron railing at your left shoulder and, on your right, a rim of cast iron and then 38 metres of air down to the River Dee. Sound changes. Voices carry out over the valley instead of bouncing back. The crossing takes minutes, not hours, and you spend most of it looking up rather than down. On the far side you turn, paddle back through the same channel, and land again at Trevor. You lift the boat clear, hand back the kit, and walk the towpath once more on foot, tracing from above the line you have just drawn across the water.
